Why being a designer is the best job in the world

Working as a designer, whatever your field of expertise, can be a stressful but ultimately rewarding occupation. While it may not be for everyone here are my top 5 reasons (in no particular order) to encourage any prospective future designers out there.

  1. ‘Variation is the spice of life.’ Unknown

One of the best things about working as part of the design team here at SoVibrant is the huge variance in the type and scale of projects that we work on a week to week basis. From huge multi-disciplinary projects like City of York Council office accommodation relocation (click here for the case-study) which can take years of strategic planning, information gathering and coordinated design to realise and is city wide in scale, to relatively smaller scale Primary School refurbishments like Trinity St. Peters (click here for the case-study) and everything in between. We are fortunate to get to design for and experience almost all market sectors and briefs. We are never bored.

  1. ‘Nothing can substitute experience.’ Paulo Coelho

As our tagline rightly states ‘We make change happen’. Really happen. Like you can stand in it happen. Our Media Productions team are an amazing resource to help us visualise and communicate our designs and concepts during the design phase, but there is no greater feeling than being able to touch, feel and experience a space that you have been involved in from its conception and managed through to its completion and delivery. I don’t know of many other occupations where you get to see your imagination realised in such a way.

  1. ‘Progress is impossible without change.’ George Bernard Shaw

While many people view design as merely a superficial or aesthetic choice, few understand the power of great design to change behaviours and mind sets. One of the most dramatic turnarounds in perceptions that we have been involved in is Hive, a residential apartment complex in Birmingham (click here for the case-study) Once voted as one of the worst places in the country to live and even nominated for TV series Homes from Hell, after a successful refurbishment and re-brand Hive went on to win Best High Rise Residential Development in the UK in 2013 (amongst other awards) and become one of the most desirable places in the country to live. Design really does have the power to change. Great design has the power to transform.

  1. ‘None of us is as smart as all of us.’ Ken Blanchard

Being able to work and collaborate with like-minded creative colleagues is one of the most rewarding parts of being a designer. No man is an island and no team is greater than the sum of its parts. Here at SoVibrant we are a multi-disciplinary team and as such we get to work with and collaborate with different skill sets to deliver our schemes and ideas. While our skills may be different our understanding and appreciation for excellent design is universal.

  1. ‘Creativity is intelligence having fun.’ Albert Einstein

Taking into account all of the above, on a personal level the most rewarding part of being a designer is the ability to be allowed to unleash your creativity. Searching for the right solution to a problem or response to a brief and knowing when you have nailed it…there is no better feeling.

If you think you have what it takes to join a successful design team feel free to send your CV and portfolio to us at info@sovibrant.co.uk
