Background

Serving one of the UK’s most culturally rich cities, official tourism organisation, Visit York, wanted to redevelop its existing retail offering to create a market leading visitor centre. SoVibrant was approached to design the new premises in the heart of the city’s cultural quarter. The new visitor centre provides a wide range of new facilities including digital advertising, ticket booking and collection, touch screen interactive maps and provides a greatly enhanced retail experience and service offering.

The Challenge

To change the historic perception of the visitor centre and create an inspiring retail space that enabled individuals and businesses to access the best that the city and region has to offer. To work within the constraints of a Grade 1 listed building to transform the interior whilst imposing minimum impact on the fabric of the building. To combine intelligent branding with eye catching interior design successfully, to deliver a new focal point for tourism within the city.

The Results

With over 76,000 visitors in its first three months of opening and a marked increase in profit and turnover, the York Visitor Information Centre has become an attraction in its own right. Having now been open for a number of years the project further illustrated its success by being voted ‘The Best Visitor Centre’ in the county at the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Tourism awards in 2014.

“SoVibrant hashelped deliver a successful and very well-received step change to the provision of information to visitors and residents in York, and a substantial increase in footfall” – Ian Tempest – External Relations Manager
