Following extensive flood damage from a burst water main to the University of Birmingham College of Medical and Dental Sciences’ catering facilities, SoVibrant was commissioned to redesign the basement food court, which covers an area of 9,500 sq ft and seats approximately 360 people at any one time.
The university accelerated and up-scaled refurbishment proposals, viewing it as an opportunity to deliver a new and exciting facility for students, staff and visitors. During a typical day, there are around 1,400 to 1,500 students, staff and visitors on campus passing through the facility.
It was the short timescale that created the main challenge for this particular scheme, with a turnaround time of five months from start to finish. The conceptual project, including all the visuals, was turned around in just three weeks and the scheme was designed to be deliverable immediately, and it was. Competent management of the stakeholder approval process and close consultation with the other contractors ensured an efficient fit-out.
SoVibrant delivered a brand and collateral package that included logo and signage to menus and packaging and more, demonstrating great attention to detail. The area also features a variety of seating options within the café including booths, high seating, and clusters – all are being used fully according to feedback.
Setting the benchmark for all further projects completed across campus, and indeed throughout the education sector, the new food court has been incredibly well received by the students and staff, and is definitely encouraging the students to participate in more on-campus activity.
