Iain Banks for The Wasp Factory – I love the way the story is so grippingly intense, yet unnervingly matter-of-fact as it builds in pace towards the final scene and its unexpected twist.

Hmm, tricky one this. Yorkshire has got to be up there, with magic places like Malham Cove, Brimham Rocks and the Valley of Desolation, but SE Asia’s pretty awesome too. And my sofa’s a top spot.
Paul Berry is an animator and creator of the sandman in 1992, a short animated movie which through music, movement and dark visual imagery tells a story about a small boy who falls victim to the nasty bird-like Sandman. Every child’s nightmare told in such a compelling way with clever use of lighting and character movement. I love it!
