The project involved the refurbishment and extension of a grade II listed building on the banks of the River Ouse in York, located within the Central Historic Core Conservation Area.

Previously used as a nightclub andbar, the building had been unoccupied for approximately 10 years and was showing severe signs of disrepair. The new proposal created offices on the existing ground floor and the first floor, two duplex apartments to the second floor in the larger section called building A. With an additional two single-storey apartments within buildings B and C, housed within a new mansard roof extension. To enable these uses to operate and provide access for all, a new service tower was constructed adjacent to the building to provide stairs and lift access to all floors. In addition a bridge link was constructed from first floor level to Skeldergate Road to allow access to and exit from the building in times of flood.

All the new build elements were designed to strike a balance between old and new, promoting a modern feel with sympathetic forms and scale. The use of structure and materials gracefully fuse new architectural elements with the historical building fabric. It was the intention of the design team to produce a high quality scheme, using modern methods of construction, to provide a solution that befits the importance of the site. The new additions to the existing building complement the original architecture as well as being sensitive to the surrounding urban fabric of York.
